Blog is short for Weblog. Usually a series of posts or entries in reverse chronological order, blogs provide an outlet for a writers (or blogger as they are called) thoughts and opinions on particular topics. A blog can be used for a variety of different reasons. Many people keep personal blogs as a type of online diary or a place to share their thoughts and feelings about particular topics or items.
Companies can also use blogs as a tool to keep their customers up to date with the latest information regarding their products and services.
Whatever the reason for having one, blogs are very popular and are accepted and embraced by savvy consumers as a legitimate form of research.
How to blog?
A close friend of mine and I were chatting two weeks ago about a business person we both knew who used his blog to create controversy in their industry. My friend has a family and little spare cash and was lamenting that if he had a healthy bank balance he would start a blog and publish his thoughts in opposition.
I was shocked when he made the statement and quickly cut across his speech to tell him that he didn't need money to start a blog, he just needed to have the time and desire to type his thoughts.
My friend hesitated not quite understanding that anyone could become a published author on the Internet and he rapidly started asking questions. Is it difficult to learn the software? What do I write? Who will read my blog?
I happily answered that we had used free software since 2006 by blogger.com and that he should write whatever thoughts he wanted to share with anyone who was interested in reading them. I offered to help him set up a blog and gave him a quick tutorial.
Within 24 hours he made his first blog post and has been writing most days since. He is a close friend and even I am delighted at the willingness he has shown to share his thoughts so openly with his readers. I love this new dimension to our friendship and am pleased that I was able to play a small role in helping a new author get published.
